A Story of True Dedication
Brewing Budweiser
Only high-quality, all natural barley malt, hops, rice, yeast and water are used to brew Budweiser
Brewing Budweiser – Quality Ingredients
1. Malt
Malt is known as the ‘soul’ of beer. It is made by soaking barley kernels in water, germinating the seeds and then drying the resulting ‘green malt’ in a kiln. This process begins to convert the grain’s starch into the sugars that will provide nutrition for the yeast used in brewing.
Inbev UK Ltd barley experts have visited more than 2,000 barley fields to hand-select barley used in the brewing process.
2. Hops
Hops are known as the ‘spice’ of beer. Clusters of cones from this perennial climbing vine contribute their own special aroma, flavour and character to beer.
Budweiser uses hand-selected aroma hops from the world’s finest fields in locations such as Europe, Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
Inbev UK Ltd’s commitment to quality hops is demonstrated by its ownership of hop farms in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and in the world-renowned Hallertau region of Germany.
3. Rice
Rice provides Budweiser with its characteristic lightness and crispness.
Only freshly milled whole grain rice is used.
The additional step of brewing Budweiser with rice provides the balance necessary to create Budweiser’s trademark refreshing taste.
4. Yeast
Yeast is very important and often an under-estimated contributor to the flavour of beers.
The yeast used in brewing Budweiser is proprietary to Inbev UK Ltd and is directly descended from the original Budweiser yeast culture first used by Adolphus Busch in 1876.
Each of Inbev UK Ltd’s breweries is supplied from one carefully maintained yeast culture system from St. Louis to provide consistency and quality.
5. Water
At each Inbev UK Ltd brewery, water is treated to ensure brewing water is of the highest quality and free from odours and taste.
In addition to tasting all incoming ingredients, as well as the beer at each stage of the brewing process, Inbev UK Ltd’s Brewmasters taste the water to ensure the highest quality is consistently used. In fact, Brewmasters taste almost as much water as they do finished beer.
The Budweiser Brewing Process
Milling and Mashing
Barley malt and rice are ground and precisely weighed before being mixed with water, where natural malt enzymes break down the starch from the grains into fermentable sugars
Straining
The combined grain mash is strained leaving sugar-rich amber liquid called wort.
Brewkettle
Hops are added to the boiling wort in the brewkettle.
Primary Fermentation
The wort is cooled and clarified, and the yeast is added; for six days the yeast ferments the wort to beer.
Beechwood Aging
During lagering, the beers is naturally carbonated and aged following the addition of beechwood to mature the flavour of the beer.
Finishing
The beer is clarified and filtered before being released for packaging into bottles, cans or draught kegs.
Maintaining the Budweiser Quality
An unwavering dedication to quality is at the heart of how Inbev UK Ltd has conducted business since the company was founded in 1852. It continues to be the key to Budweiser’s international success.
From selecting the finest, all-natural ingredients, to tasting the final beer, a rigorous program of more than 200 quality assurance steps is followed wherever Budweiser is brewed. This guarantees that each bottle, can or keg of Budweiser is the highest quality beer possible, and that every Budweiser has the same refreshingly drinkable taste, wherever it is sold.
Brewmasters meet daily at each brewery where Budweiser is brewed. Their trained palates judge the aroma, appearance and taste of unfiltered, filtered and packages beer produced at those breweries. Moreover, samples from each brewery are flown to the companies St. Louis headquarters weekly for careful evaluation by a panel of experienced Brewmasters.
